[Kpop Planet Story] Four 5th-Generation K-pop Boy Groups Formed By Boys Planet Contestants

Mnet audition program Boys Planet made big waves in the K-pop industry last year. Not only did it create the winning team ZEROBASEONE, the program also gave birth to various by-product boy groups, all together spurred the advent of 5th-gen boy groups.

Let's meet five 5th-gen boy groups that are fully comprised of former Boys Planet contestants. Get ready to fall for the diverse charms and amazing discography of these monster rookies!

1. ZEROBASEONE

As the official group formed through Boys Planet, ZEROBASEONE comprises the top 9 contestants from the audition program, which includes leader Sung Han-bin, final winner of the show Zhang Hao, Kim Ji-woong, Seok Matthew, Kim Tae-rae, Ricky, Kim Gyu-vin, Park Gun-wook, and Han Yu-jin. The group's name represents the "journey of the nine trainees to be completed as one after their debut", implying the members' commitment to share the unfinished journey of their group from zero to one with their fans.

Three months after the final episode of Boys Planet, the ennead debuted under WakeOne in July last year with their debut mini album "Youth In The Shade". The title track "In Bloom" is a refreshing summer vibe song that showcases the pure and youthful image of the group. The album not only earned them their first music show champion on SBS M's The Show only eight days after their debut, but it even sold more than 2 million copies, setting a new sales record for K-pop debut album.

Following the success of their debut album, ZEROBASEONE quickly returned to chart with their second mini album "Melting Point". Different from "In Bloom", the new title track "Crush" is a powerful EDM that demonstrates a dark and mature side of the group. Despite the bold change in concept, the album broke their previous record by amassing over 1.7 million pre-orders and over 2 million copies of first-week sales, making them the first K-pop group to achieve double-million seller status in debut year.

Apart from dropping global hits, ZEROBASEONE is also active in various variety programs. Check out their pre-debut reality show "Camp Zerobaseone" and variety show "ZBTV" to get to know more about the members!

2. TIOT

TIOT is a pre-debut boy group formed by RedstartENM that is set to debut this year. It consists of 4 former Boys Planet contestants Kim Min Seoung, Kum Jun Hyeon, Hong Keon Hee, and Choi Woo Jin. TIOT stands for "Time Is Our Turn", which declares the group's ambition to shine on stage.

TIOT dropped a pre-debut mini album "Frame the Blueprint: Prelude to Possibilities" in August last year. The title track "Unbeatable" is a remake of 1st-gen K-pop group Click-B's 2002 legendary hit. The song sings the members' fearless attitude and determination to overcome challenges in pursuit of success. The rearranged music and choreography fit the energetic high school students concept of the group and add trendiness to this 20 year-old track.

Although TIOT has not officially debuted, the group has held various concerts to meet their fans, including a live concert in Japan in October, and a year-end fan concert in Korea. The members even covered "Lemon" in their Japanese live concert. All these pre-debut activities make fans even more excited for their official debut this year.

Earlier this month, Kum Jun-hyeon dropped his first solo digital single "WWW", which he premiered at the year-end fan concert. Check out the music video of the song below to enjoy his soothing vocals!

3. EVNNE

In August last year, Jellyfish Entertainment reached an agreement with several Boys Planet contestants' companies to form a temporary boy group EVNNE. The septet consists of leader Keita, Park Han-bin, Lee Jeong-hyeon, Yoo Seung-eon, Ji Yun-seo, Mun Jung-hyun, and Park Ji-hoo. EVNNE is an acronym for "Evening Newest Etolie", which means the group's aspiration to shine bright and capture everyone's attention like new stars rising in the night sky.

EVNNE debuted in September with their first mini album "Target: Me". The lead track "Trouble" is a Baltimore Club genre song that is about the members being wild troublemakers who are determined to break the rules and change the world. The album recorded over 240,000 copies of first-week sales and claimed top spots on real-time and daily physical album charts.

To show the group's gratitude to ENNVE (their fandom), EVNNE held their first fan meeting "Good EVNNEing" in Korea and Japan respectively in November. Not only did the members perform their songs and interact with ENNVE, but they surprise the audiences by covering various legendary K-pop songs and delivering special performances.

Yesterday, EVNNE made a comeback with their second mini album "Un: SEEN", in which the group continued to demonstrate their rebellious "bad-boy" concept. The title track "UGLY" is an upbeat tech house track that is about embracing one's vulnerabilities and imperfections, and staying true to who you are.

4. ONE PACT

ONE PACT is a 5-member boy group under Armada Entertainment that includes leader Jongwoo, Jay Chang, Seongmin, TAG, and Yedam. The group's name demonstrates the members' will to create strong impact on the K-pop scene as it encompasses the meaning of "gathering as one and create huge impact together". The group is produced by Armada Entertainment's CEO Kangnam, who is a Japanese-Korean artist and a former member of hip-hop group M.I.B.

ONE PACT debuted in November last year with their first mini album "Moment". Different from the previous three groups that have a youthful image, ONE PACT showcases a more mature and darker concept. The title track "Must Be Nice" is an emotional track that depicts the complex emotions of loving a self-centered partner, in which the members expresses their wish to have someone who truly loves and cares for them. Notably, TAG produced the majority of the tracks in the album, demonstrating his musical talent.

Apart from "Must Be Nice", ONE PACT also released a performance video for one of the B-side tracks "G.O.A.T", which is an upbeat hip-hop track mixed with addictive tropical house beat.
