Melon and Tencent Music Bring New K-pop Awards to TIMA 2026

K-pop is taking another step toward becoming a truly global music phenomenon as Melon introduces two new K-pop-related award categories at the 2026 TME Live International Music Awards (TIMA).

The awards ceremony, organized by Tencent Music Entertainment, is scheduled to take place at Kai Tak Stadium in Hong Kong on August 22 and 23, 2026. This year's event will feature performances from a wide range of artists, including major K-pop acts such as Super Junior, Stray Kids, Tomorrow X Together, aespa, IVE, PLAVE, RIIZE, BABYMONSTER, NCT WISH, and All Day Project.

Kakao Entertainment, the company behind Korea's leading music platform Melon, is partnering with TIMA to establish two new categories: Global K Artist and Melon Music Choice.

The Global K Artist award is particularly notable because its selection process combines international music data with fan participation. The award is based on the Global K Chart, a cross-platform ranking system designed to reflect the performance and popularity of K-pop artists across several Asian music markets.

For the Global K Artist category, chart data will account for 30% of the final result, while fan votes will make up the remaining 70%. Voting took place from July 20 through August 9, with the winning artist scheduled to be revealed during the TIMA ceremony.

The Global K Chart brings together data from major music platforms in different countries, including Melon in Korea, Tencent Music platforms in China, and Line Music in Japan. Rather than focusing exclusively on streaming numbers, the system also considers indicators related to audience and fan engagement.

This approach represents an interesting development in the global K-pop industry. As Korean artists increasingly build audiences across multiple countries, measuring their popularity through data from a single domestic or international platform can provide only part of the picture. A multi-market chart can offer a broader view of an artist's international reach.

The second new category, Melon Music Choice, takes a different approach. Unlike Global K Artist, this award will be determined entirely by a professional judging panel. Fan voting will not be part of the selection process, with the award instead recognizing artists who have delivered strong results on the Melon chart over the past year.

The partnership also highlights the growing connection between music streaming platforms, international awards shows, and K-pop fandoms. Platforms are no longer simply places where fans listen to music; their data and communities are increasingly becoming part of how artists' global influence is measured and celebrated.

For K-pop fans, TIMA 2026 is therefore more than another international music awards event. With a large lineup of Korean artists and newly introduced awards connected to Melon's global chart initiatives, the ceremony could provide an interesting snapshot of how K-pop's worldwide popularity is being evaluated.

As K-pop continues to expand across Asia and other international markets, collaborations between major music platforms may become increasingly important. The new TIMA categories are another example of how streaming data, fan participation, and international music events are coming together to create new ways of recognizing K-pop artists.
